Well done to our senior hurlers who braved the elements to record a good win over Ennistymon today in UL. The game started in bright sunshine but it didn't take long for the dark clouds to descend and a shower of hail meant that ball handling and striking were that bit more difficult and made playing the ball through the lines almost impossible. Causeway had the additional challenge of playing into the wind during this period but driven on by the tenacity of Callum Carey and Jake Segal in midfield, we matched our Clare opposition point for point in the opening exchanges. Our back line was well on top during this period limiting the opposition to long range efforts with Tomas Godley at full back marshalling his defence well around him. As halftime neared a nice passage of play from Causeway resulted in a chance for Will O'Sullivan who made no mistake as he cleverly lobbed the sliotar over the advancing Clare goalkeeper, who had previously made phenomenal saves to deny Causeway goals, in such miserable conditions a goal was always going to be vital.
Conditions improved in the second half as did the game as a spectacle, with the hurling flowing more freely the Causeway forwards had more of an opportunity to express themselves and did so in excellent fashion with Dylan Costello and Ivan Conway acting as orchestrators for much of our attacking play while John Curtin at centre back supplied a steady stream of inviting forward passes into space. Second half substitute Jevon Carey who usually operates between the sticks was making particular good use of the quality ball and finished the afternoon with an impressive 1-3. Eoin Lawlor raised a further green flag to put the game beyond all doubt in the closing stages. At the sound of the final whistle it was Causeway 3-9 to Ennistymon's 0-8.
Senior hurling will resume post-Christmas. Well done to players who have had a demanding schedule over the past couple of months in hurling and football and a special mention to parents who have been very accommodating and supportive in organising lifts for training etc.
